Dip n Dip Kuwait – Review

I’ve heard that ‘patience is the virtue of the wise’, but I’ve seen that it’s also a virtue of the hungry! Long lines always intrigued me and we used to see a lot of patient customers controlling that immense urge for something sweet as they joined the long line outside Pinkberry. But now the lines have shifted to another popular place that satisfies every fantasy with chocolate….Dip n Dip !
Like most business establishments this venture had its humble beginnings on the 15th of February 2009, when two chocolate lovers, Firas Daker and Amer Al Haffar, embarked on an adventure and started their first store…. And the rest as they say is history.
On the weekends, getting into this place is like waiting in line to watch a blockbuster on its first release. So, frustrating as it sounds, we avoided the weekends and visited this place on a weekday, after lunch. The place already had a few customers and we were quickly rushed to our seats. The staff is used to a fast paced environment and despite the pace they managed to throw in a smile with the friendly greeting. The menu with all the choices with chocolate and ‘nothing savory’ was alluring. Not confusing, but it makes even the grey haired feel like a child, after all its chocolate! 😉
They give you the choice to indulge in Belgian Dark, Milk and White chocolates. With some deliberation we decided to go for the Classic Decadent Dip n Dip Brownies (K3) which is their signature brownie topped with chocolate of choice and served with an ice cream of the customer’s choice on the side. For one, WE WEREN’T GIVEN A CHOICE. It was only later as I glanced through the menu that I read about the choice. We also got the Fettuccini Crepe (KD 3.250) which is a fettuccini styled crepe served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with the chocolate of choice. Again NO CHOICE WAS GIVEN (grrrrrr….)
Milk chocolate is chocolate that has a significant amount of milk powder or condensed milk added. The EU is stricter with the level of cocoa solids that need to be present for a chocolate product to be legally labeled as ‘milk chocolate’. In the United States the minimum level is a surprising 10%! My first thought of this (Belgian) chocolate was that it was incredibly creamy. The cocoa flavors are mellow to the extreme. It’s that almost subliminal acidity and typical chocolate flavor that plays below the cream. When your taste buds pull all those different flavors together, to me at least, it just tastes of Christmas. And I love it! But this was indulgence at first to say the least, and eventually it became gluttony. One thing I’d like to point out is the texture of their ‘classic’ brownie. To me, a brownie ought to be fudgy (dense, with a moist, intensely chocolatey interior) or chewy (moist, but not quite as gooey as a fudgy one). This however was more like an over baked cake (minus the burnt flavor). It was kinda crumbly. We just left most of the brownie 🙁 The Crepe however was pillow soft, spongy and the ice cream’s presence is vital to balance the intensity of the chocolate. The portions were extremely generous and for the first time we could not finish our dessert. Honestly, given a choice for the Decadent Brownie we might have tried the white chocolate since the brownie was already served with milk chocolate.

Overall – This is a chocolate for a momentary dalliance with indulgence. It’s for people that like sweet milk chocolate but realize that there’s more to life than a sugar rush. Patience may be a virtue of the wise, but not of the hungry. Not worth waiting in a line on a weekend, but maybe on a weekday for a sugar high!
