I can have shawarma’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner..(ok I’ve slighy exaggerated). But I do love this delicacy and I’m always searching for something different. The inception of the concept shawarma restaurants in Kuwait (Slice, Shuwaikh shawarma, Dean & Deluca…etc) just opened up the traditional dish to another world of possibilities. Head about this Shawarma place managed by Mais Alghanim that was serving the traditional dish with all possible combinations of spices and sauces… and I just had to try it out !
I’m basically deriving my review based on 2 separate visits almost a month apart. To begin with the place was pretty easy to find, since it was on the main road. The place is clean compared to many shawarma joints. They have lined a few benches outside just in case you are really hungry and can’t wait. The variety of meat is interesting; Chicken, Beef, Doner, Tandoori, Taouk, and Kabbab. When it comes to the breads, you have your choice of Lebanese, Samoun, Saj, or a baguette. Finally for toppings they have quite a few and you can continuously visit for about a year, mix, match and perfect you Shawarma.
The shawarmas here are priced at about Kd 0.750 / 0.850 with the Lebanese bread and Kd 1.400 to Kd 1.600 with the Saj. They are priced pretty reasonable for a concept shawarma place. On our first visit we tried the Crunchy Julius, Chubby Gonzales, and the Beef Shawarma. Don’t be fooled by the name cause there was nothing ‘Chubby’ about the Gonzales. The difference was in the sauces used and sad to say that the Shawarmas were pretty dry. They were really frugal with the sauce. It took me a month to forgive them for all the calories and it was’nt even worth it.
This time I went in the afternoon and I saw only the Beef, Chicken, Tandoori and Doner. I ordered the Beef (standard), Turkish and Jollywood (tandoori). I requested them to add ‘extra’ sauce and that made a world of difference. All the 3 shawarmas were good, but I preferred the standard shawarma with beef. The meat was a bit crispy on the outer and moist inside. The pickles were not too salty (unlike some places) and really added to the experience. The standard beef (with extra sauce) will definitely be always on my order list. I had the food on the bench outside the restaurant since I didn’t want the meat retain its texture and not get too soggy because of the sauce. Will I go there again..?? probably yes, but more out of a curiosity about the range of flavors and combinations…
