Slice (Doner Shawarmas in Kuwait)
When you drive towards Kuwait City down the Abdullah Al Salim road (Road no. 50) towards Kuwait City, after the Liberation Tower and in front of Souq Al Wataniya, you will see an isolated structure that looks more like a monument showcased on the street. But don’t be misled….it’s a shawarma joint (Slice). In fact its quite unlike the simple shawarma shops commonly seen. I would probably categorize this as one of those concept restaurants that specialize in shawarma. It’s been about 4 days since they’ve opened up (19th Aug 2013) and surprisingly they still don’t have a menu card. They’d been catering for a few of months before they went retail. It’s pretty easy to spot the place with the cluster of cars (no parking area) and the sight of a long queue waiting, like the ones you see in front of a theater. My friend had placed the order for the two types available, the Doner Shawarma – one in saj bread and the other in a pita bread. After a 20 minute wait we got our order and I have to say that it was worth the wait :).
They were packaged well and there was a difference in the sauces used in both the shawarmas. I enjoyed the taste of both. The pita bread was a bit crispy on the outside (a kind of waffleish texture if you would) and the meat was juicy and tender. Now for the downside…I think that KD 1.750 is quite pricey especially if you categorize this as a shawarma because we tend to compare it with other places that serve customized shawarmas (Dean & Deluca, Shuwaikh Shawarma..etc). But to the defense of Slice, I would say that Doner Shawarmas are served here unlike any other place I’ve been to. In fact, it’s quite similar to the gyros you get in the US. The most important negative of the place is the accessibility to the restaurant. It’s really hard to find parking and once you get your food you’re missing the ‘experience’ factor. Enjoying food is about the ambiance, look, smell, feel and taste. While the taste is definitely good, I really wish they would expand their place to cater to the ‘experience’ of enjoying a Doner Shawarma.

Overall – I really wish they had served meat from Turkey. Could go back..?!
